Books for Sale

The BIG book sale!

The Big Book Sale – Saturday 22nd August 10am-3pm

And it is big! We have been overwhelmed by the wonderful donations of books and DVDs from people in the village and are looking forward to seeing you at the sale on Saturday 22nd August from 10am-3pm.

As the weather is so changeable at the moment, the sale will take place in Church Farm House Barnyard opposite the church.  All books are now in quarantine; there will be a strict one way system which we hope will ensure that you all feel safe;  books will be charged at £2 each or 3 books for £5; DVDs are £1 each – unfortunately we are not able to offer change due to current restrictions but we are happy to take donations!  Remember all the money raised will go towards the renovations at St Cyr’s.

Please come along and browse and buy – there is something for everyone – for bird lovers, gardeners, walkers, and cooks plus biographies, autobiographies and novels old and new.  It’s also a lovely opportunity to catch up with friends from the village. We look forward to seeing you there.

Church News

St Cyrs Open

Good news! I feel like the Archangel Gabriel, in that I bring you good news….St Cyr’s church will be open from this Sunday, August 2nd for weekly worship -resuming its usual pattern  of Evensong at 6pm on the 1st and 3rd Sundays and Holy Communion on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 11:10am.

The Church of England are strongly recommending

  • that face coverings be worn in church
  • 2m physical distance will be observed in Church
  • hand sanitisers will be used on entry and when taking Communion
  • there will be no singing
  • only bread will be taken in Communion.

We understand that there will be those who are feel unable to join us and so live streamed services from St Georges or Zoom services will remain available on our YouTube channel or on Facebook pages – under ‘St George’s Cam.’ The service can also be listened to down the phone line -ask Fiona for details.

Organ Restoration

More Good news I bring! The beautiful organ at St Cyr’s circa 1894 is being restored. This is being funded from church funds, local benefactors and from grants. It will be so wonderful to hear the organ back to its former glory from the beginning of September. During the time that this work is being carried out, the church will be closed apart from weekly worship on a Sunday.

My thanks to all those who have worked hard both to get the church open and also towards  the organ restoration.

With kind regards,

Fiona

St Cyr’s needs your books

BOOK SALE Saturday 22 August, St Cyr’s Church, Stinchcombe from 10am – 3pm

Are you an avid reader with book shelves heaving under the weight of books not read for many years?  Have you had a lockdown clear out and now have books and DVDs ready to go to a second hand shop?  Is a second hand book shop your first port of call when looking for a something new to read?

If so, why not donate your books to St Cyr’s, browse our selection for exciting and intriguing authors and help raise money for our beautiful Church at the same time?

The book sale will take place on Saturday 22 August outside the Church (or at The Barnyard, Church Farm depending on the weather) from 1000 until 3pm.  All books will have been sanitised before the sale.  If you would like to browse, please bring some gloves with you although these will also be available. Please bring cash/change as we would prefer not to handle money.  Additional donations to the church are welcome!

If you have books to donate to the sale, please sanitise them before leaving at one of our drop off locations before Tuesday 18 August:

  • Church Farm, opposite the Church (please leave books on the table outside back door)
  • Manor Farm, Wick Lane (please leave the books in the box behind the gate)
  • 6 The Buildings, The Street (please leave the books on the steps behind the grey gate)

Any unsold books at the end of the day will be added to the collection at the back of the Church.

The plant sale held earlier in the summer in aid of St Cyr’s raised a wonderful £600- let’s try to do the same with our book sale.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Our Exodus Journey – what is your story and would you like to go deeper?

A letter from the Vicar

Dear All,
On August 2nd, I will be preaching on the God who accompanies us through the journey of life. God did this for HIs people in the past, as we will see in the book of Exodus, and He promises to do this today. He is a God who  ‘draws near’ and the God who provides for us. I would like this service to involve some of our personal stories of God doing just this in the past, during Lockdown  and before. I know it is sometimes hard to put  our stories into words but I would like to give us all this opportunity to encourage one another as  we ‘keep the faith’ and  journey with our God who is with us. Please email your stories to me.

Exodus

On another matter- who would like to have a study book to accompany their exodus experience on a Sunday? A book that you can work through yourself.  I wholeheartedly commend this one, Exodus by Antony Billington.

I think this is so well written – ‘bible study’ and yet covering real 21st century life and including personal story, it’s got everything! I would then be very happy to meet up a few times over August to chat about what we have further discovered, either over Zoom or in the Vicarage garden (if allowed). Let me know if you would like to do this again by phone or email. If you know others who are not online but would like to join in, please can you let them know.

Thank you for reading this. I look forward to hearing from you with personal stories and maybe also in wanting to discuss Exodus further in a few evenings in August.

With God’s blessings for you,
Fiona

Reopening of St Cyrs for Sunday Worship

Dear All

We have been working hard on a plan to reopen both churches for Sunday Worship.

Please read this letter which explains our plans and how church will be different in the coming weeks.
To assist with our planning please complete this survey so we can estimate numbers and take your input into account. (If you would rather reply by email or phone please see details in the letter)

The first service will be a test Holy Communion Service at St George at 9:30am next Sunday, the 26th July. First service at St Cyr will be evensong on 2nd August. On-line services on Sunday will continue for those who do not wish to return to church yet.

God bless

Rev’d Fiona
