Countdown to Register Footpaths and Bridleways

Comments Off on Countdown to Register Footpaths and Bridleways

There is an approaching deadline for registering all footpaths and bridleways.  Any unregistered rights of way will be lost for future use.

Although the deadline is not until 1st January 2026, it is expected that the process for registering any rights of way may take some time and everyone is urged to start the process as soon as possible to avoid a last minute rush.  Under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2000/37/section/53) there is a clause that any existing rights of way, that are not currently registered, may be lost.  If you know of any footpath or bridleway that is not marked on the Definitive Map of Public Rights of Way held by Gloucester County Council (GCC) and would like to continue to use it in the future please register it.  .  Although it is not the definitive map, the footpath map on the GCC website (https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-rights-of-way/public-rights-of-way/rights-of-way-online-map/) is an excellent indication of whether a right of way is registered or not.

If you need more information please contact either the GCC Highways Officer at GCCHighways@amey.co.uk or the Parish Footpaths Warden, Chris Snellock, at chris.snellock@gmail.com

For those of you who are really interested in researching old rights of way in the Parish, there are a couple of workshops being run by the Open Spaces Society: 12th May at Chipping Norton and 13th May at Bishops Cleeve.  The courses are free, but places are limited.  The courses run from 9am to 4:30pm.  Details are at: https://www.oss.org.uk/what-we-do/training-courses/
