Berkeley Rail Bridge Speed Limit

Comments Off on Berkeley Rail Bridge Speed Limit

BridgeA routine inspection of the Berkeley Rail Bridge, on the A38, raised potential problems with the structure meaning the bridge will eventually need to be replaced. The inspection, carried out by Gloucestershire Highways, found the bridge to be weak but not in immediate risk of failure. It also found that steps could be taken to reduce any further deterioration. Before the new bridge is designed, detailed surveys will be carried out and Gloucestershire Highways will liaise closely with Network Rail. In the meantime the bridge can be protected so a 30mph limit has been introduced to reduce the impact and stress on the structure. This is particularly relevant in the case of heavy goods vehicles. A temporary barrier system has also been installed to narrow the road on the approach to the bridge, to a point where drivers should feel that they need to slow down to travel through this section. A weight restriction will not be considered because this is an important route for goods vehicles travelling through the county and provides the alternative route in case of a closure on the M5 motorway. The 30mph speed limit is a temporary measure and will be revoked once the bridge works are underway.
